Our Story

In 2013, Sheikh Xasan Buxane led a small group of Saint Paul Muslims in purchasing a 127-year-old building — the former Church of St. John — and converting it into a masjid. The city's Muslim population was growing fast, and there weren't enough places to pray Jumu'ah, let alone raise a family in the deen. That first congregation is why Darul Uloom exists. Everything since — the Qur'an classes, the youth programs, the Friday khutbahs, the janazahs this community has stood together for — grew out of a handful of people deciding the East Side needed a home for its Muslims.

Why We're Here

Darul Uloom exists to give this community what it needs to grow — in faith, in knowledge, and in how people treat each other. That's not a slogan; it's close to word-for-word how DUIC describes its own mission: to build an environment where people can grow spiritually, psychologically, and socially, and to help this community make good choices, together. In practice, that means a masjid that's open for every prayer, classes for a five-year-old learning her first surah and a grandfather returning to Qur'an after forty years, and an Imam who's there for a nikah, a hard conversation, or a janazah — whatever the moment calls for.

Our Community

Darul Uloom serves the Muslim families of Saint Paul's East Side — a community that includes longtime Minnesotans, recent arrivals, converts, and everyone raising kids somewhere in between. Some people here have been praying in this building since it was still being renovated. Others walked in for the first time last Jumu'ah. Both are home here.

We want Darul Uloom to be the place East Side families turn to at every stage of life — from a child's first Quran lesson, to a teenager finding their footing, to a family leaning on their community in life's hardest moments.

More Than a Masjid

Darul Uloom is open every day for the five daily prayers, but that's just where it starts. We offer Quran instruction for every skill level, classes and workshops on Islamic knowledge, youth programs built to engage and empower the next generation, and support for families facing the loss of a loved one. Whatever brings you through our doors, you're welcome here.
